Muslims in Dearborn, Mich., rallied on Sept. 28 for blasphemy laws to be implemented in the United States, so that their prophet, Mohammad, cannot be slandered.
They want to make it illegal to talk about Islam, which is in direct opposition to our first amendment and is a form of Sharia. In Muslim countries, non-Muslims (also referred to as infidels) are not allowed to discuss Islam -- even if what they are saying is true. It can land a non-Muslim in jail and, many times, even a death sentence.
What I have to say about this: If you don't like American laws -- go back to the Middle East where "infidels" are treated as second class citizens. Here in America, everyone is created equal and has the freedom to express themselves, regardless of whether or not the message is offensive.
Speaking of offensive, think about how Christians feel about the "Piss Christ," a piece of art depicting a small plastic crucifix submerged in a glass of the artist's urine. This piece was a winner of the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Arts, which -- get this -- is a United States Government agency. This piece is currently on display in New York City.
Is this art offensive? Of course. But would I call for it to be banned? Absolutely not. We take the good with the bad in America in the name of free speech.
